Months of planning and prayer came to a culmination on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Brentwood Hills Church of Christ, where the 5th Annual Back 40 Outreach Sportsman’s Dinner took place on a spectacular fall afternoon. Back 40 Outreach was founded by a group of Christian young men with a passion for the outdoors and a passion for sharing Jesus Christ. The Annual Sportsman’s Dinner is the largest undertaking of the year for the men of Back 40 Outreach, and this year’s dinner was the largest event ever, both in terms of numbers of attendees and the wide range of activities for those who ventured out. This year’s event was more of a fair than a dinner. The kids in attendance were delighted with the climbing wall, casting competition, and indoor laser shooting range. The car show included everything from electric and water-powered vehicles to high-performance race cars and the infamous Ford GT. There was no shortage of exciting things to see for the outdoorsman: a great collection of antique hunting and fishing artifacts courtesy of Howard Harlan and Gibby Gibson, Spook Spann’s new world record whitetail on display, the latest in Triton and Ranger Bass Boats, seminars on outdoor cooking, fly fishing, turkey hunting and bass fishing. Oh yeah, just so no one missed out, there was even a TV so attendees could watch one college football upset after another! ![]() Back 40 Pro Staff with Rick Burgess No Back 40 event would be complete without ridiculous portions of mouth-watering food. The smell in the air may have been partially responsible for the record numbers this year as Martin’s Barbeque catered the event, providing delicious barbeque, slaw, and beans. Of course, the cooks of Back 40 also made a great wild game jambalaya that was unbeatable. With bellies full, the attendees filled the auditorium at Brentwood Hills for awards from the 2008 bass tournament and the day’s casting competition. There were lots of door prizes given away as well including: rods and reels, lawn equipment, gift cards, guide trips, and best of all, a brand new camouflaged recliner that would be the envy of any Belle Meade parlor. The highlight of the afternoon, without a doubt, was hearing the message delivered by Rick Burgess. Mr. Burgess, the “Rick” of the nationally syndicated Rick and Bubba Radio Show, brought roars from the audience with his stories of growing up in rural Alabama and tales of his father, Coach Burgess, and the well-deserved discipline he passed out to Rick, his brother, and all the neighborhood children. More importantly though, Rick used his time to challenge the group to be strong in a world where many Christians are weak. He pleaded that we live the lives that Jesus calls us to live and obey his words. Rick’s powerful delivery of God’s message, brought many to their knees asking God for forgiveness and strength to go into the world and be the light that we are called to be.
